Dear Saishu-Kai Friends

Chin-Ho Lee

It has been over two years since I retired from Gould Electronics in January 1999.  Since then I have been traveling a lot to my homeland Taiwan, where I have been working as a part-time consultant.

Last summer, I signed a consulting contract with ITRI-Taiwan, a semi-governmental research institute specialized in industrial technologies.  This institute is located in a city near Shintsu, about 100 kilometers south of Taipei.  My job there is to help a group of about 10 scientists and engineers conducting research in the areas of applied electrochemistry.

I am supposed to visit them three times a year, each time working for about 8-9 days in a three-week period.  I like this job a lot, because of following reasons; (1) it is in the area of my expertise, (2) I can spend meaningful time with young professionals, (3) I can continue using my brainpower, (4) I can stay close to the fields of my professional interest, and best of all, (5) I get paid for doing all these fun things.  Since they seem to be happy with my services and I like the arrangement, it appears that I might stay with this organization for a few more years to come.

Next, let me tell you a little about my family.  I have been married since 1966, one year after my first arrival in Cleveland.  My wife and I have a son, Mark, and a daughter, Ellen.  Both children are now married, independent, and live happily in the San Francisco Bay areas.  My son and his wife are both medical doctors currently under clinical training in the medical school of Stanford University.  My daughter and her husband are both computer engineers, working for high tech companies.

Last August, we  welcomed our newest member of the family, when my son became the proud papa and I became the first happy grandpa.  It is a boy and his name is Anton.  He is a very happy and very lovable baby indeed.  When we go to Taiwan, we usually, but not always, stop by at S.F. to see our children. With the arrival of Anton, now we have no reason not to make a stop at S.F.  Anton gives us additional incentive to go to see everybody.

Recently I heard that Kanai and Endoh-kun are setting up a HomePage for our members. I think it is a wonderful idea and I happily accepted invitations extended to me for making contribution to the HP. This is my first communication, but I have to stop for now.  Next time I plan to tell you about my living these days in my US hometown Cleveland.
